The wind tunnel is the area in the head of the recorder where the blowing air is formed into a leaf of air. This air leaf is the determining element of the sound of a recorder. In conjunction with the labium, the airleaf is the source of the vibration that generates the tone of the flute. The shape of the wind tunnel is therefore one of the defining principles for the range of musical expression of the instrument.
