Engelberg Five-Tone Recorder Engelberg Five-Tone Recorder

Oiled Pearwood.
Range: d" ,e" ,g" ,a" ,b"

The Engelberg Five-Note Recorder has been designed especially for beginner instrumentalists. The dimensions of the windway differ somewhat from the design of traditional recorders without, however, losing or restricting the possibility of clear articulation.

Nowadays, sadly, articulation is very often neglected, even though it has been known for a long time that it is tone that makes music. What does a melody sound like if it consists of nothing but equally feebly blown notes? Even our language is alive because of the colours of articulation. When we tell fairy tales to our children, we use all the different shades of language to draw our little listeners into the story. If music is to be alive in children, it is important that they can really feel it.

At an age when children have already learnt to articulate sounds through language, this ability should be used in, and developed through music. Therefore we paid enormous attention to the possibility of free and broad articulation in the development and making of each instrument. As the Engelberg Five Note Recorder has been designed especially for beginners, we deliberately limited its range to concentrate on basic technique during lessons. Its limited range encourages children to look for short, well-tuned and appealing melodies.

Strangely the subject of articulation has often been neglected. But how does a melody sound when it solely consists of breathy notes that sound the same? Our language is also brought to life by the many possibilities of articulation. When, for example, we tell children a fairy story we use all these variations to enable them to really picture the story. In order for music to become a vital element in children’s lives, they must be able to experience it.
It certainly would not make sense if children, who had already learnt to articulate sounds in their language, would not use and further develop this ability for music. We took this into account during the design phase and today, during the production of each individual recorder we are particularly careful to allow free and broad articulation. The tonal range has been intentionally limited so that the teaching can focus on the basics. In this way children are not distracted by a wide, and, for them, incomprehensible tonal range, allowing them to concentrate on playing melodies accurately and sensitively.

The tonal range consists of the 5 notes d,e,g,a and b which can be played using the four fingerholes. The instrument is made of seasoned waxed pearwood. The shape is designed to create a harmonious balance of light weight and sturdiness.

If required, the Engelberger five tone recorders can also be supplied with small finger cups which show the children where to place the fingers not used for the five tone recorder.

With the instrument are delivered: fingering chart, wooden cleaning rod, cotton, bag
